Project FACT Southeast Raleigh on the Move

Project FACT sponsored a walking program targeting Southeast Raleigh residents. The walking program, “Southeast Raleigh on the Move” encouraged African Americans and Hispanic youth and families to be physically active and to promote walking sites in the community. The goal of Southeast Raleigh on the Move walking program is to for churches and organizations to establish a walking club among their group to increase physical activity among youth and families. Gethsemane SDA Church built a walking trail on the church grounds and submitted a sidewalk petition to the City of Raleigh for a safe and walkable connection to the Sanderford Road Park and surrounding neighborhoods.

Southeast Raleigh on the Move walking program consisted of educational classes and screenings such as blood pressure, height/weight and body fat %. Each walker received a pedometer and an educational booklet mapping walking trails in Wake County, a walking readiness quiz, stretching demonstrations, healthy eating guidance and hydration information. Each walker was responsible for keeping track of his or her own walking progress by using a walking log.
